Master Stone Mason in the Quarry at Night Time, Ca 1860. Fascinating French Antique Oil on Panel

Description

One of my personal favorites. The subject matter is just so incredibly rare; this 19th century oil on panel depicts a master stonemason - complete with his traditional headwear and frock- and his apprentices in a quarry.

Having researched the scene, I have only found a handful of paintings with this theme - the most famous being of course Canaletto's "Stonemason's Yard" in the National Gallery.

I like the mystery of the scene: the mason, turning his back on us, overlooking the valley. And of course the the very atmospheric light-in-darkness, reminiscent of Goya.

Our painting is French in origin, with a trace of signature at the lower left. It is difficult to date precisely, but I would venture between 1850-1880. It is painted on a "reclaimed" panel that originally had a different use, and is actually made up of three parts. This is why a vertical lines are visible at about an inch from the left and right side.

Measuring 21 x 27 cm, the painting is presented in its original mid 19th century frame, which has visible repair.
