Brave Fine Art has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
It’s interesting to note that her ears are fully covered as this suggests that she’s probably more 1840s than 1850s.
Around her neck, she’s wearing a beaded necklace, perhaps comprising of coral beads, which is secured with a gilt clasp. Coral jewellery was popular during the mid-19th-century as many held the belief that it could protect the wearer from various illnesses. Even baby rattles and teething objects were made of coral, as families strived to keep their children healthy. Most of the pieces were created by the master-craftsman and carvers of the Naples region in Italy.
The portrait is housed within a high quality contemporary black frame with gold trim.

Condition: Craquelure and minor losses around the periphery probably due to the previous frame. Two small scratches on the right-hand side.
