Jean Laudy, Portrait of Madame Pierrard

1920 - 1940
Description

A beautiful impressionistic oil on canvas depicting ‘Madame Pierrard’ wearing a plush ostrich feather wrap and resting her right arm on a cushion. The lusciousness of this scene seems to wrap itself around you and it’s a painting with a great deal of atmosphere.

Jean Laudy (1877-1956) was a Dutch painter that enjoyed portraying the female form in an impressionistic manner. He was introduced to art by his father, who was a sculptor, and soon moved to Brussels to begin studying under the notable portraitist, Isidore Verheyden (1846-1905).

Before too long, he was commissioned to paint several well-known figures, including members of the Belgian monarchy - namely Queen Elisabeth, King Albert I and King Leopold III.

His popularity ultimately led to a street in Brussels being named after him and then later a museum in Venlo.

The portrait is housed within an early 20th-century giltwood frame with carved corner ornamentation.

Size including frame: 47” x 39” / 118cm x 99cm
