Fine Pair of Oil Paintings by Francois Lafon

A fine pair of oils on paper laid to board by Francois Lafon. The pair are typical of the artists work they have an ethereal dreamy feel and depict classical Goddesses with cupids. The are subjects are showing more flesh than is usual for his larger paintings and it may be that as they are done on paper he simply painted them as an exercise, and didn't intend for them to be displayed. The pair are both signed to the lower left: Francois Lafon. Francois Lafon (1846-1913) is a well known and highly regarded French artist of the period. He came from a family of artists and was a pupil of his father. He debuted at the Paris Salon of 1875 and exhibited historical scenes, religious compositions, genre scenes and portraits. He was a member of the National Society of Fine Arts from 1890 and his works are in several French museums.

The pair have both been professionally cleaned and are in excellent order. The frames are period gilt frames with a great faded country house look, they are in good order with some old repairs to knocks and losses. The slips are modern with a rustic antiqued gilding.
