A pair of late Victorian oils on canvas by Charles W. Oswald. The pair both show working horses, one with horses drinking at the end of the day, and the other where the team has stopped for lunch. The pair are typical of the artist''s work, there is a quick and loose feel to the brushstrokes and the horses are well studied. The paintings are signed, one to the lower left, the other to the right. Charles W. Oswald was an artist typical to the late Victorian period, he was very commercial and painted almost entirely paintings of highland scenes and rural working horses, of which the rural scenes as here are the more desirable. He concentrated on painting to sell and didn''t exhibit widely. He was Liverpool based and did exhibit at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool in 1892, his period of work is 1890-1900.
The pair have both been professionally cleaned and are in good condition with a typical craquelure. The pair also retain the original gilt frames which again are in good untouched cond...ition.
The pair are good examples of the rural genre and would work well in a cottage or country interior.
C.1900.
