Description

An unusual and very interesting antique painting, depicting a skyline of silhouetted trees, rendered in simple earth colours, burnt umber and van Dyke brown. The result is a work of art that is atmospheric and very modern for its time. Dating from circa 1890, and French in origin, our oil on canvas is unsigned, with no indication as to its author. Measuring 46 x 55 cm, the overall framed size is 61 x 70cm.

There is good reason to believe that this painting has interesting provenance: it is likely to have belonged to Jean Gabriel Goulinat (1883-1972), a conservator at the Louvre, as it was acquired in a sale where Goulinat's art collection was dispersed.
