Joseph Appleyard 1908-1960.Painter of sporting subjects in oils and watercolour; draughtsman in black and white.Studied at evening classes at the Leeds School of Art 1925-32,but in the main was a self taught artist.Taught Art in Leeds,Keighley and at the Swartmore Settlement(Leeds).
 
He received numerous commissions to paint racehorses including several post-war winners of the Derby and St Ledger.Exhibited at the RBA and at many exhibitions in the North of England,including several one-man shows in Yorkshire.Contributed many illustrations to the Dalesman.Lived in Leeds.Killed in a road accident in Leeds when alighting from a bus.
