Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1950s.
He subsequently moved to Paris, where the legendary art dealer Ambroise Vollard sold his paintings.
He had one man shows at the important Galerie Charpentier and Galerie Drouant, and exhibited at the Carnegie Institute and the 1937 Paris World's Fair.
He is recognised as a modern master of chiaroscuro in the tradition of Caravaggio, admired by Emile Bernard, and considered a peer by his friends Derain, Utrillo, Maurice de Vlaminck and Marquet.
The painting here presented is very representative of his extremely personal style. Modelling light and shade with thick impasto, it is a strong, exuberant work of art. Signed at the lower left, it measures 55 x 46 cm and dates probably from the late 1940s or early 1950s. The overall framed size is 61 x 53 cm (some wear to frame).
There is good reason to believe that this painting has interesting provenance: it is likely to have belonged to Jean Gabriel Goulinat (1883-1972), a conservator at the Louvre, as it was acquired in a sale where the collection of Goulinat was dispersed.
Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1950s.
