A fine mid-20th-century portrait of ‘Betty Bell’ attributed to British artist, William Charles Evans (1911–1978).

Researching the signature on this beautiful painting led us to an interesting discussion over at ArtUK regarding a portrait of Alderman HR Walker. That particular work bears the same signature and was ultimately attributed to William Charles Evans following a great deal of debate.

Evans attended the Royal Academy Schools (1930-1935) and exhibited at seven of the Academy’s Summer Exhibitions. It seems that his style may have changed during the mid-60s as his later works are looser and more painterly in their appearance.

The portrait is signed and dated in the lower left.

Condition: Very good overall. The small white mark on the right hand side is paint and is not an issue.
