A 19th-century oil painting depicting a beautiful sunset over a wooded area of Favrskov in Jutland, Denmark.

The artist, Frederik Christian Jakobsen Kiaerskou (1805-1891), has used a masterful graduation of tone that moves a burnt orange hue through to a hazy light blue. These beautiful colours are then reflected in the water, which is dappled with foliage and lined by trees.

Kiaerskou was trained by the well-known landscape painter, Jens Peter Møller (1783-1854), and later became a member of the Royal Danish Art Academy. In 1963, he was commissioned to paint a depiction of Bernstorff Castle for Princess Alexandra of Denmark to celebrate her marriage to Edward VII.

The painting is signed and dated 1868 on the reverse. It also has a later illegible inscription.

Condition: Craquelure throughout but the paint layer is stable under varnish.
