This landscape has a poetic and mysterious quality that is somewhat reminiscent of medieval paintings.

On the verso, it was ascribed to Eugene Clary by a former owner, but I believe that the latter simply misread the signature, which is that of Léon Clerget, an artist who was active in the 1920s-40 painting Paris street scenes and seascapes in Brittany.

With its rich colours and purity of subject, our painting is very much in the tradition of the Pont Aven/Nabis artists and is likely to depict a bay in Brittany.
