'The Workshop' Oil Painting by A. Ernest Harley

A very interesting and atmospheric oil on canvas depicting the interior of an old workshop. The painting is very dark and is supposed to be like this as it has been professionally cleaned. It draws you in and the more you look the more you see. It perfectly captures the feeling of going into an old workshop. It is quite loose and free in technique and must have been painted quickly to capture the light and mood. The painting is signed to the lower right and dated 1928. The signature is for A. Ernest Harley, a Scottish artist who exhibited between 1899-1928 at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Glasgow Institute and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. The painting is mounted in a later frame, though it has been with it for some time, it has been later gilded, but it has a worn feel that works very well with the nature of the painting. A very interesting and decorative work.
