Description

This painting requires light and attention, and if you are willing to give it both, you will be well rewarded.

It is a tranquil, very symbolist work which puts nature in the foreground, juxtaposing the fluidity of clouds and light with the solidity of trees.

Thomas Leitner studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Franz Rumpler from 1893. Having won the Prize of Rome, he travelled to Italy and Dalmatia in 1905 and 1906 to pursue his studies. He joined the Vienna Kunstlerhaus in 1908, where he exhibited regularly. During the First World War, Leitner was active as a war artist. Our painting, dated 1919, would have been painted just upon Leitner's return from the front.

Paintings by Thomas Leitner were acquired both by the Emperor Franz Joseph I, and by the Emperor Karl of Austria.

Works by the artists are in the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, and in the Museum of St Polten.

The painting presented here is an oil study on very thin cardboard which has been laid down on board. It is signed and dated at the lower right.

Measuring 38 x 55 cm, the overall framed size in a later frame is 51 x 67cm
