A very lovely and moving cloud study by Fernand Ballet (1893-1927), the gifted artist from Bordeaux who sadly only lived to the age of 34.

Ballet was keenly interested in colour and volume, and the relation between the two, and produced highly original, subtle studies of light and movement. Our cloud study, poetic and almost abstract, is a good example of this.

Ballet had studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Bordeaux, as well as with Louis Cabié and Hubert-Gautier. He exhibited at the Salons Bordelais and the Independents. His work was posthumously honoured in a retrospective at the Museum of Bordeaux in 1947.

An oil on panel, our painting measures 22 x 27 cm. The overall framed size in a more modern frame is 33.5 x 38 cm.
