Fine Victorian Oil Painting of Horses After John Frederick Herring

A fine oil on artist’s board of horses at a stable door. The work is typical of the painting of John Frederick Herring and although it does not appear to be a direct copy the artist has definitely taken elements from his work. The painting is signed to the lower left: Julia Hargreaves and dated 1887. I cannot find a record of the artist but she was obviously trained and the artist’s board is a quality board and it may be she just did not exhibit, or she married and changed her name. The painting is in good condition having been professionally cleaned, it also retains the original gilt frame which does show some slight appropriate signs of wear but is in great untouched condition. The whole has a wonderful country house look and is a quality work in the Herring manner.
