Victorian American Sublime Landscape Oil Painting

A fine and interesting Victorian oil on canvas laid down on board, landscape painting of the American school of sublime landscapes. The work is very much in the tradition of the American school of landscape painting depicting the huge, dramatic landscapes that could only be found in North America. The work shows a river cascading over rapids through unbelievably high mountains and could only really be an American landscape. The work is signed H.Dumbleton who not being recorded in this country is most likely American. The painting has been laid down onto a heavy modern board for some time, thankfully when this was done the title etc that was on the reverse of the canvas was recorded on the board. The painting is mounted in a fine and heavy Victorian gilt frame and the whole has a great dramatic impact. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is ready to hang. C.1900.
