Lamorna Birch "Winter" Watercolour

1920 - 1940
Description

Samuel John Birch was born in Egremont, Cheshire. He studied in Paris before visiting Cornwall and settling in the Lamorna Valley in 1892. He adopted the name "Lamorna" in 1895 to distinguish himself from fellow artist Lionel Birch (an idea suggested by Stanhope Forbes). He was attracted to the area by the Newlyn Group of artists and was a founder member of a second group of painters working around the Lamorna area. Birch was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1924 and was made a full Royal Academician eight years later. He exhibited over 200 works at the Royal Academy, as well as exhibiting throughout this Country and abroad. The present watercolour "Winter" is a simple but very appealing watercolour measuring 11"x 12". It is signed lower left and framed in a quality mount and oak frame giving an overall size of 18"x 19".
