Mansion House Antiques & Fine Art has dated this piece to the 1850s.

She is wearing a dark grey dress, with black trimmings, which has a cream lace pleated stand up collar and cuffs. She has a locket on a black ribbon around her neck.
Her hair is plaited and piled up on top of her head with an ornament to one side and she is wearing gold drop earrings.

There is a chatelaine hanging from her belt. On the table is a tazza, possibly with a flower arrangement in it and perched upon the very top is a canary.
Her husband is seated on a padded roll-back chair and is leaning one arm upon the edge of a table or desk. He is dressed in a black suit with waistcoat and a black cravat with a stud.

There is a gold watch on an albert hanging from his waitcoat.
His hair is quite long and curly and he had a beard and moustache.
The fine detail, particularly on the faces of these portraits is quite remarkable and they make a very handsome pair, unlike so many portraits of men and women of this and earlier periods.
