A beautiful summer landscape makes one think immediately of Sisley - it is a perfect example of French Impressionism in around 1890.

It features with green pastures, pollarded trees, cattle, and lone figure at work on the meadow.

An oil on canvas measuring 38 x 55 cm, it is unsigned, but annotated "A Marais" in an old hand on the verso. This attribution is far from absurd: Adolphe Charles Marais (1856 - 1940) is known as a specialist in the depiction of bovinae.

Born in Honfleur in Normany, he received his first artistic advice from Eugène Boudin, who lived locally. The regular visitor to the region and friend Charles Daubigny, encouraged Marais to pursue his career as a painter in Paris. In the capital, Adolphe Marais exhibited at the Paris Salons from 1876. His work is now in numerous museums, such as those of Honfleur, Rouen, Cambray and Pont Audemer.

The overall framed size is is 51 x 67 cm. Please note that the antique leaf gilded Barbizon frame has seen a fair amount of repair.
