A splendid modernist haymaking scene by Gilbert Diebold (1931-1997) dating from circa 1960. It is a wonderfully dynamic painting, with a degree of abstraction and a great deal of joy.

Diebold painted it when he was still a young artist. Having studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and with Raymond Legueult, had just obtained the prestigious Second Prize of Rome in 1960. He would continue to exhibit at the major Parisian Salons and obtain state commissions.

Our painting was acquired at Diebold's one man show at the Galerie Norval, an international Gallery based in New York and on 14 rue des Beaux Arts in the St Germain area of Paris. Saint Germain des Près, with the Sartre, de Beauvoir and the Deux Magots, was of course at the cutting edge of French modernity at that time.

Our painting measures 60 x 73 cm, is signed at the lower right, and is presented in its original narrow gilded frame.
