A beautiful painting of a young lady and her treasured dog by notable Danish artist, David Monies (1812-1894).

Monies was a shy man from a humble background who was raised in poverty during a time of economic turmoil in Denmark. But despite this, he developed a prestigious talent and is now regarded as one of the better-known Danish portrait artists of his generation.

At the age of just 12, he gained access to tuition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and soon began exhibiting his portraiture. This promising first step provided the foundation for him ultimately becoming a full member of the Academy in 1848.

This particular painting depicts a young girl and was probably created for a noble Danish family. It surely provided a great deal of pleasure when completed.

Size including frame: 17” x 15¼” / 43cm x 39cm

Year of creation: c. 1860

Condition: The canvas is a little loose but aside from that it’s in excellent condition.

Artist’s auction highlight: £8,866 achieved at Butterfield & Butterfield, USA, in 1997.
