In the early 20th Century, Bernheim-Jeune were the first to present works by Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Paul Cézanne, Henri-Edmond Cross, Kees van Dongen, Henri Matisse, Le Douanier Rousseau, Raoul Dufy, Maurice de Vlaminck, Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice Utrillo.
The gallery became one of the centres of the artistic avant-garde.
Our landscape - an oil on board which is dated August 1913 on the verso - is a very free, almost abstract sketch. According to the inscription on the verso, it was painted at Houlgate, in the Calvados region of Normandy. There also is an indistinct name or signature on the back which might be Bernstein - or simply the word Bernheim.
An oil on board measuring 19 x 26 cm, the overall framed size in a more modern frame is 25.5 x 33 cm.
