Skippings Fine Arts has dated this piece to the 1880s.
He had studios there and in Boston, and made several painting trips to Europe, including a stay in Paris from 1880-83.
He settled Washington DC in about 1888, but also painted in the West and is known to have been at Yosemite on a sketching trip in 1892. Among his best known pictures were The Flight above the Clouds" - which sold during his lifetime for $10,000 - and a portrait of President Garfield.
Hilliard exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1876 to 1888, the Brooklyn Art Association, the Boston Art Club, as well as at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy of London.
Our oil, painted on (mahogany) panel is dated 1881 and was therefore clearly painted in the Ile de France region near Paris, where the artist sojourned at the time. A delicate, subtly coloured water landscape, the artwork measures 24 x 19cm. Presented in its original modest frame, the overall framed size is 31 x 26 cm.
