Description

This painting has an almost hypnotic quality to it - something about those peaceful ripples on the water. It is also the most charming picture I have encountered in a while. With freshness and lightness that feels effortless, it depicts a young couple on a boating lake - a scene that is tender, but without any sentimentality.

It is a pre war work from the late 1930s or early 1940s by Gabriel Vié (1888-1973), a member of the Salon des Artistes Français. At the Salon, he received a special mention at the exhibition of 1935, and was awarded its silver medal in 1942.

An oil on masonite measuring 55 x 45 cm, it is presented in a frame by Cadres RG – possibly the best framers in the world. The business was started in the late 19th century by Emile Gault, and by the mid 1930s, Picasso, Dali and Chagall could regularly be seen on RG’s premises to have their paintings framed. The overall framed size is 74 x 64 cm.
