Description:

Here is a fine quality antique English George III oak low farmhouse dresser base, circa 1810, with wonderful narrow proportions (6ft 1?” wide) and in excellent condition. The style of this dresser suggests that it probably originates from the North West / West Midlands of England. The dresser features a stunning single-plank oak top with an up-stand and boasts a scribe moulded edge and flame mahogany cross banding to the perimeter. Below, the dresser incorporates three large cock beaded drawers, which also display flame mahogany cross banding. The two drawers either side feature dummy lock escutcheons, while the centre drawer incorporates a working lock and working key. The drawer fronts incorporate brass key escutcheons; with brass swan neck handles and brass back plates. The brass handles are old period Victorian replacements. The drawer linings and bottoms are pine lined and constructed with butt joints. The dresser is raised on tapering square legs to the front and rear, with an attractively shaped apron, a single plank backboard to the rear, and the frame as a whole is built using with the traditional peg construction method.

Dimensions:

Height = 83.9cm or 33” or 2ft 9”

Width = 187.6cm or 73?” or 6ft 1?”

Depth (including handles) = 43.2cm or 17” or 1ft 5”

Condition Report:

This dresser base is in excellent condition, which is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of them. The top is good condition. There is no damage or missing banding or cock beading on the drawer fronts. The drawers incorporate later brass swan neck handles; most likely replaced in the Victorian period. The central drawer retains its original working lock (with key). The two outer drawers feature the original faux / dummy lock escutcheons. The drawers close flush to the frame. This item is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
