R. Christiansen, Portrait of Neils Daniel Kemp, Oil Painting

Description

An early 20th-century portrait of Neils Daniel Kemp (1797-1852) wearing a dark jacket, a cross-shaped diamond brooch, and a shirt with a high upstanding collar. The portrait was created by R. Christiansen in 1925 after the original by Danish artist, Morten Thrane Brünnich (1805-1861).

Neils was born in Copenhagen to Christian and Dorothea and he worked as a ‘Hofkobbersmed’, which translates as either a court buyer or a coppersmith. In 1830, he married Dorothea Christine Schmidt and records state that they went on to have at least eight children.

Inscribed with the artist’s name on the reverse.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size: 20” x 17” / 52cm x 44cm x 1cm

Year of creation: 1925

Condition: Some scuffs around the edges where it was previously framed but otherwise fine.
