Seaside Town Oil Painting By Ethel Louise Rawlins

A very interesting post impressionist oil on canvas landscape scene by Slade and Newlyn artist Ethel Louise Rawlins 1877-1962. The work shows a quiet square in a town by the sea with just two figures. It has a great feeling of calm and peacefulness about it. The painting is signed to the lower left.
 
Ethel Louise Rawlins (1877-1962) was a well-known painter in oil and watercolour of landscapes and still life subjects. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and later in Newlyn, Cornwall during the early 1900s. Rawlins lived in Northampton and in Cricklewood, north London during the early part of her career and in about 1920 she settled at Hassocks in Sussex later moving to the nearby village of Ditchling. She exhibited at the Royal Academy 1915-37, at the Society of Women Artists 1900-62, and with the Women’s International Art Club, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Hibernian Academy and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
