Description

A characterful half-length portrait of a handsome continental gentleman wearing a white shirt, dark jacket, and black bow tie.

It’s interesting to note the subtle changes in fashion that occurred throughout the 19th-century as these can often provide clues as to the date of a portrait.

For example, this particular gentleman is wearing his collars turned over at the tip, which is a style that originated in the 1870s. This, combined with the way that his jacket is worn partially open at the top, helps to give us an approximate date of 1880.

Year of creation: c. 1880

Condition: Artwork with some scuffs around the edges due to its previous frame along with light craquelure. But no major issues.
