Superb Oil Portrait by Fletcher J Mercer

A superb oil on canvas portrait of a man painted in sepia tones by Fletcher J Mercer. The painting is just wonderfully observed and the detail of the face stunning, particularly when you think it is worked in only two colours essentially. The painting is obviously a sketch but was never meant to be anything else as the gallery label is still on the reverse.

Fletcher J Mercer was a landscape, flower and portrait artist exhibiting between 1901 and 1922. He exhibited primarily with the New English Art Club but also showed at the International Society, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Scottish Academy.

The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. It is framed in the original gilt frame which retains the gallery label and description for Chapman Brothers of Chelsea.
