Oil Painting by Robert Hilton

A large and impressive oil on canvas landscape by Robert Hilton. The painting shows a typically rural scene with a cottage on the edge of woodland, a pond with geese, and two men working by the cottage door. The detail is lovely and the technique very impressionist in style with the use of bright vibrant colour to catch the light of the summer day. The painting is signed to the lower right 'Rob Hilton'. Robert Hilton is recorded as exhibiting around 1886, he was London based, living in Cricklewood. He exhibited landscapes at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

The painting has been professionally cleaned and a couple of small holes repaired. It is mounted in a modern very good quality frame which has been antiqued to give the look of a Victorian gilt frame appropriate to the age of the painting. The whole is in excellent ready to hang condition. The work is a great piece of late Victorian art, with a rural subject be a complete lack of 'chocolate box' nostalgia and a feel of light and warmth. C.1880.
