Those who know my gallery have probably noticed that I have a penchant for art deco period Italian landscapes: brooding, dramatic, with a touch of neo-classicism, a hint of cubism, and great elegance. To me, they very much encapsulate this fascinating period of the early 20th Century.

The landscape presented here, painted around 1920 or even a little earlier, is a wonderful example.

An oil on its original canvas, our painting measures 65 x 54 cm. Visible (stable) vertical craquelure leads me to believe that the canvas was once rolled and then re-stretched - which makes perfect sense, if it was painted by a foreign artist visiting Italy, who thereafter took it home.

Unsigned on the recto, it is annotated "H de Waroquier" in an old hand on the verso. This attribution is far from absurd, if you look at de Waroquier's early work. Just for reference, I am adding to this listing a photograph of a Henry de Waroquier drawing from the same period, which of course is not part of the sale.

The artwork is presented in a frame that has certainly been with the painting for the last 50 odd years. It is a little tired looking, but of good quality. The overall framed size is 77 x 88 cm.
