A colourful shore scene depicting three beached fishing vessels under an early morning’s light. A fisherman is preparing to set sail for the working day ahead, while three other figures look on.

It’s an intriguing painting as it bears the signature of the prolific marine painter, William Anslow Thornbery (fl. 1858–1898), who is highly regarded for his attractive coastal views.

There are several similarities with Thornbery’s style and the subject certainly fits alongside many of his other works.

However, as we purchased the painting as ‘manner of’ Thornbery we’re also offering it on that basis. If it were upgraded, its valuation would be around £2,000. Either way, it’s a very decorative piece.

The painting is signed in the lower right and housed in a painted wooden frame.
