Still Life Oil Painting by Edwin Steele

A fine oil on canvas painting by the artist Edwin Steele 1861-1933. The painting is typical of classical still life with a group of fruit on a stone shelf with a curtain drawn behind. The work is slightly unusual for the artist, who specialised in fruit, as it contains a vase with ivy and some rose hips, this may be to indicate an autumnal time of year. The Steele family were involved with painting on porcelain at the Rockingham factory, and their style of porcelain painting can clearly be seen in this work. The painting is signed to the lower left. The work is in good condition, it has been professionally cleaned and a small hole repaired. The painting is mounted in a bespoke modern gilt frame antiqued to reflect the age of the work. C.1890.
