The colourful joyousness and bold brushstrokes of this truly impressionist painting are not only full of charm, but also quite masterly. Dating from the 1870s or 1880s, this sunny landscape with haystacks and two figures feels modern, and very fresh.

An oil on canvas which was laid down on board a long time ago, our painting, perhaps a sketch or fragment, is unsigned. Although Pissarro and Sisley spring to mind when looking at it, I do not have an attribution to an artist: there is simply too little to go on.

Almost certainly painted in plein air, I believe the landscape depicted to be in the South of France - maybe near Avignon, with the Alpilles mountains in the background - in the spring or early summer.

The artwork, measuring 17 x 27 cm, is presented in its original frame. The overall framed size is 29 x 39 cm.
