It is extraordinary to think that this painting is well over a hundred years old. It was painted in 1907 by Pierre Philippe Bertrand (1884-1975), a young artist at the forefront of modernity. With its bold and unusual colours, it is as fauve as Vlaminck or Derain's work from the same year. Painted with verve and individuality, it is fresh and timeless.

1907, the year our work of art was created, was the first year that 23 year old Bertrand exhibited at the major Paris salons. His works are now in the Collections of the Musée du Luxembourg (in Paris, by the Jardin du Luxembourg), among others.

Bertrand was born in Lorient in the Morbihan region Brittany, and our painting shows Hennebont, a small medieval town just down the road. It is located near the mouth of the Blavet river, which we see here.

An oil on canvas measuring 19 x 33 cm, the overall framed size in a more recent frame is 27 x 41 cm. Signed at the lower right, situated "Hennebont" and dated 1907, the artwork is dedicated "A Mr et Mme Clairet", friends or patrons of the artist.
