Description

This oil on canvas dating from circa 1870 has a very special atmosphere to it. It is tranquil yet is mysterious, with mist rising in the lush vegetation of a garden. The gardener - one can distinguish dungarees and a straw hat - is making his way home. It is almost possible to smell the scented spring air. And how fresh and modern it is for its time!

The painting is unsigned, and while I have not been able to attribute it, it is clearly the work of a true Impressionist. The only clue to its origin is the stamp on the verso.

While the stretcher bars have been replaced, the painting is on its original canvas, stamped by the colour merchant Alexis Ottoz, Paris.

The Ottoz family where suppliers of artists materials favoured by the Impressionists. Alexis' brother Jérôme Ottoz appears in a portrait by Degas who - like Manet - regularly used his canvasses. Renoir's "At the Theatre" (in the National Gallery) is on a canvas stamped Alexis Ottoz.

Measuring 38 x 46 cm, our canvas has one patch of repair, spots of touch ups, and minor ondulations. Given that Alexis Ottoz ceased trading in 1876, it is almost certain that the picture was painted prior to this date.

Beautifully framed, the overall framed size is 47 x 56 cm.
