A large three-quarter-length portrait of a seated gentleman by noteworthy British artist, Hugh Goldwin Rivière (1869-1956). It’s always so fascinating to see a portrait depicting a subject in their own home, as we gain a broader understanding of their context, position, and character.

In this particular portrait, the older gentleman seems relaxed in his environment, while also looking out through youthful eyes that convey vivacity and vigour.

Hugh Goldwin Rivière studied at the Royal Academy Schools and worked primarily in Paris, London, and later in Sussex. His father was Briton Rivière RA (1840-1920) who was also a fine portraitist and was elected a Royal Academician in 1881.

Like his father, Hugh exhibited extensively, including 90 paintings at the Royal Academy and 24 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Examples of his work can be found at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and many other public collections.

The painting is signed and dated in the bottom left.

Year of creation: 1918

Condition: Small areas where the paint is thinner and a few minor losses. The frame has age-related wear, losses and repairs.

Artist’s auction highlight: £12,000 achieved at Sotheby’s, UK, in 1994 for ‘Portrait of Margaret Jane Russel, Mrs Herbert John Allcroft (1910)’.
