Brave Fine Art has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
It hard to determine what the gentleman is wearing from what can be seen, so the clues are scarce.
On the reverse, the stretcher bars bear stencil marks indicating their size and we’ve personally not seen these on paintings earlier than 1800. But perhaps the canvas was initially part of a larger painting and then subsequently cut down and attached to later stretchers. It’s impossible to tell without further scientific analysis, so we’ve given it our best guess of circa 1750 - circa 1850.

Condition: A few minor losses and general darkening due to age. We’re happy to clean this for you but perhaps it’s best left in this mysterious state.
