The rose doesn’t give the game away either as flowers can appear with both genders.
The only real clue is in the way the child’s hair is parted, as boys tended to have side partings whereas girls had centre partings.
This is a good example of the type of 19th-century folk art portraiture that was created by itinerant artists as they moved from town to town.
