Antique Original Equestrian Engraving, 1733, Baron Reis D'eisenberg Horse Motto: The Bridle Is My Virtue

Description

"Motto: The bridle is my Virtue". A most beautiful, very rare plate from the 1733 book: "L'art de Monter à Cheval - Le manège Moderne" written and with illustrations by Friedrich Wilhelm Baron Reis D'Eisenberg, engraved by Bernard Picart. Picart, born in Paris in 1673, gained honours at the Academy of Paris at the age of sixteen. He was a master designer and engraver and worked in Paris and Amsterdam until his death in 1733.

The Baron d'Eisenberg (ca. 1700-1770) was an aristocrat who managed riding schools across Europe, including the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

He had spent some of his youth at the manège of Saxe-Weimar before entering into the service of the Emperor. After six years in Naples as the Master of Horse of the Viceroy, he returned to Vienna where he worked with M. de Regenthal, the imperial Master of Horse. He participated in the coronation of the Emperor Charles V at Frankfurt in 1711, then spent some time in England, but was back in Germany before 1753. He probably died in Tuscany where he was Director and Master of the Horse at the Academy in Pisa.

A group of drawings by Eisenberg, commissioned by Henry, 10th Earl of Pembroke in gouache, are still at Wilton House.

Our engraving measures 20.4 x 28.7 cm (margins cut). It is luxuriously custom framed and includes a gorgeous mat and museum glass. The overall framed size is 36.5 x 44 cm.
