Description

A beautifully serene depiction of several small fishing vessels under a cloudy moonlit sky. The moon is breaking through the clouds and sending a shimmer of light across the tips of the waves.

The artist is unknown but was clearly inspired by the work of the exceptional French painter, Claude Joseph Vernet (1714-1789). Vernet was a master of moonlight scenes and this painting draws upon many of his stylistic elements.

It’s housed in an attractive wooden swept frame with carved floral embellishments.

Size including frame: 18” x 14” / 46cm x 36cm

Year of creation: c. 1850 - c. 1900

Condition: A few minor paint losses, particularly around the edges due to its previous frame. The frame itself is in fair condition with some age-related wear.
