An outstanding portrait of a debonaire young gentleman wearing a dark grey suit, white shirt and red tie. He has a look synonymous with the mid-20th-century and you can easily imagine him working within a stylish 50s advertising agency or for a magazine.

The artist, Otakar Baran (1905-1986), began his career in advertising and design and would’ve had contact with many young business executives and fashion models. There’s also a small chance that this is a self-portrait but it’s hard to know as the only photo currently online of the artist is from his later years.

In 1937, Baran visited Paris, where he undoubtedly had the chance to develop within a flourishing art scene. This trip was one of his many excursions throughout Europe as he travelled fairly extensively.

The painting is housed within a sturdy wooden frame and signed in the bottom right.

Condition: The canvas has a few small dents but these are minor and do not detract from the overall appeal. Frame with light age-related wear.
