Our painting has a superb pedigree. It featured in Warnod's 1954 exhibition at the Galerie Charpentier, still bearing the exhibition label on the verso.
The Galerie Charpentier - set the Paris townhouse which now houses Sotheby's Paris - was one of the most reputed, innovative and exciting Galleries in Europe, which exhibited both old and new Masters In the period between 1940 and 1960, it presented one man shows of Maillol, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Vlaminck, Modigliani, Utrillo, and Maurice Asselin (by whom we also have works!)
The artwork was acquired from the estate of the Bernheim family, who were art dealers in Paris since 1863. It is likely that a family member acquired the painting at the aforesaid exhibition.
An oil on board, the painting measures 22 x 16 cm. The overall size in its original white painted wooden frame is 33 x 25cm.
