Description

A fine early 20th-century oil on canvas by award-winning Danish artist, Valdemar Kornerup (1865-1924). It depicts an elderly gentleman reading a newspaper while sitting at a long wooden table. A gentle light passes through several plants and illuminates one end of the table.

Kornerup has beautifully built up the oils in certain areas to bring texture to where the light lands. Whereas the figure is painted flatter and quietly blends into his surroundings.

Valdemar Vincent Kornerup was born in Copenhagen and studied at the local Academy of Fine Arts. In 1887, he began travelling around Europe and visited France, Italy, Spain and Greece, before heading for Norway in 1898.

He painted many of these peaceful interior scenes throughout his career and several include figures undertaking regular everyday activities. There’s a sense of calmness and mild introversion in Kornerup’s works, which is sometimes reminiscent of his Danish contemporary, Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916).

The painting is housed within a handsome gilded frame with decorative corner motifs.

Condition: Artwork in very good condition. The little white speckles shown in the close up photos are reflected light and not visible with the naked eye. Frame with some age-related wear including scuffs in the lower left.

Artist’s auction highlight: £7,500 achieved at Sotheby's in 1994 for ‘The Good Samaritan’.
