During the 1860s and 70s, the French impressionists were having an impact on painting styles throughout Europe and some British artists were beginning to adopt a looser, more casual, style of brushwork.
As you can see, this painting has been created with daubs and broad brushstrokes, which means that this is either a sketch in advance of a possible larger work, or the artist has been influenced by the impressionists. Either way, it’s a very nice little scene.
