Description

A beautiful 19th-century oil on canvas depicting an idealised scene in rural Switzerland. The mountains seem to sweep around this picturesque valley as four cows graze by a tranquil lake. In the distance, the highest peak is partially obscured by dense cloud.

The painting is unsigned but it’s clearly by a skilful artist. The trees are rendered particularly well and they guide the eye from the foreground to the background.

Housed in an exquisite gilded swept frame with floral embellishments.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Size including frame: 22½” x 18” / 57cm x 46cm x 5cm

Year of creation: c. 1850 - c. 1900

Condition: Craquelure throughout and frame with some minor losses. Areas of the frame are dark, probably due to handling.
