There is a touch of van Gogh as well, in the boldness of stroke. There is a degree of abstraction, and a great amount of individuality.
The artist, Mireille Glodek-Miailhe (1921-2010) had an exceptional fate. Raised in Paris, at very young age, she moved in the artistic circles of Aristide Maillol and Marc Chagall.
Politically committed, she fought for feminism, anticolonialism and was active in the French Resistance during the Nazi occupation of France. Her artistic work is, in the same way, of a rare intensity. A "colourist", in the tradition of Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, her works are exuberant and full of audacity.
In our painting, it is spring: one tree is already in bloom, the others keen to follow.
Painted in 1961 before her more abstract period, our oil on canvas is signed and dated at the lower left and, measures 80 x 40 cm. In its original linen-clad frame, the overall size is 96 x 57 cm.
