From the 10th century, Argentat is known to have had a priory and a priest in a walled city.
Guarding his rights, the Viscounty did not grant any charter of liberties and the local community had to be content until, in 1615, parish trustees were appointed to manage it. However, from 1263, the Turennes conceded an important market on the Saint Andrew's day to the town, which is the oldest fair in Lower Limousin. Argentat sided with the Huguenots in the Wars of religion, creating a troubled situation for half a century.
Gabriel Vié (1888-1973) exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he was a member. He received a special mention at the exhibition of 1935, and its silver medal in 1942.
Our painting is an oil on canvas dating from ca 1920-30, is signed at the lower right and measures 27 x 22 cm. The overall size including its more recent frame is 39 x 34.
