A very interesting and decorative oil on canvas painting by Mabel Grace Trood (1872–1951). The painting shows a coastal scene of a cottage by the sea with a path leading up to it with hollyhocks, and in the distance can be seen the mast of a ship. The painting typically catches the soft light of the west country where the artist lived and also the ethereal feel often seen in Edwardian artwork. The painting has been doubled framed with a silvered interior frame that has fitted into a large, grand, dramatic period gilt frame. The painting has been professionally cleaned and a couple of small holes repaired. The whole makes a grand decorative impact and in itself is an interesting piece of west country art.The work is signed to the lower left: ‘Mabel Trood’ for Mabel Grace Trood (1872–1951) she was a figure, landscape and still-life painter.
