An impressive late 19th-century still life depicting an arrangement of various flora in a dark, high contrast, style made popular by the Dutch old masters.

The painting is signed ‘Josling’ in the bottom left and, although little is known about the artist, we’ve discovered two other paintings with the same signature. Both are still lifes with one selling in Surrey (dating to around 1887) and the other in New York.

It’s also interesting to note that the canvas stretcher bars appear to be roughly hand sawn, so perhaps the artist prepared these themselves rather than using a traditional supplier.

A beautiful old painting that would make a fine centrepiece.

Size including frame: 37½” x 31?” / 96cm x 80cm x 6cm

Year of creation: c. 1870 - c. 1910

Condition: Artwork in good condition. Frame with some paint losses and scuffs, particularly along the bottom. Stretchers with signs of historic worm, which have been treated. Please refer to our warranties page for further information about our approach.
